Star Metro - Spanish Transport Minister Resigns After Deadly Train Crash

Spain’s Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, has announced his resignation from the government, citing the need for political dignity and coherence following a deadly high-speed rail collision in Urda. The accident, which occurred last Wednesday morning, resulted in at least 69 deaths and left dozens more injured.

Puente informed the Permanent Commission of the Congress of Deputies that he made the decision immediately upon learning of the crash in Toledo province, located approximately 150 kilometers south of Madrid. He stated that a minister responsible for transport cannot remain in office after two accidents of such gravity occur within less than a year.

"This is an issue of political dignity, coherence and empathy with the victims," Puente said. He emphasized that his departure aims to align with the standards set by his party and those who preceded him, acknowledging the sacrifices made to serve a fairer society.

The collision involved two high-speed trains carrying more than 500 passengers. Local authorities reported that at least 110 people were treated in hospitals, with 15 remaining in serious condition. The Civil Aviation Accident Investigation and Prevention Body (CIAF) confirmed the death toll of 69 is provisional, noting a very high number of injuries are still pending confirmation.

Puente thanked Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for his "unlimited trust" and urged progressives to support the government in the upcoming general elections on November 29. He described the current period as a "sad moment" for Sánchez, adding that politics is a path of ups and downs.

In his final remarks, Puente called on socialist militants to remain united and proud of past achievements while focusing on future goals. The resignation marks a significant shift in Spain’s political landscape as the country prepares for early elections.
