Star Metro - Google Mandates AI Integration for School Search Access

Google has clarified its stance on artificial intelligence in educational settings, confirming that while schools can disable specific AI tools, they cannot use Google Search without enabling integrated AI features. The company announced that Google Search and AI Mode are deeply intertwined, meaning institutions must accept AI Overviews or cut off student access to the search engine entirely.

The clarification followed a blog post by Chris Phillips, Google’s Vice President and General Manager of Education, published on November 3. Phillips stated that the new defaults for K-12 schools would leave Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search turned off by default, citing requests from schools for greater control. However, he emphasized that enabling Search requires enabling its AI components.

"Search and AI are deeply integrated," Phillips told The New York Times, according to Ars Technica. He explained that if a school does not enable AI, students will not have access to search and will instead see a message from their school indicating the service is unavailable. Google reiterated on X that it is updating Search for schools to support learning, specifically noting that AI Mode and AI Overviews will offer step-by-step guided learning to prevent students from receiving quick answers to schoolwork.

Ars Technica reported that schools enabling AI would choose between standard AI Search and a Guided Learning version. Google’s post described only the guided-learning option. For schools seeking search without AI, the alternative is to switch providers. DuckDuckGo, for example, allows users to turn off AI features. Schools using Chromebooks and Google Workspace for Education would need to change the default search engine on every student device.

Google has not clarified whether these new default settings apply to schools outside the United States. Its blog post stated that Guided Learning in Classroom is global but provided no specific country details for the new controls. Meanwhile, Google is actively pushing AI in Indian classrooms, aiming to reach 75 million students and nearly 2 million educators by the end of 2027 with tools such as Guided Learning in Gemini and Gemini-powered feedback on assignments, according to NewsBytes.

The Search condition raises data privacy questions in India. The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025, require verifiable parental consent before processing a child’s data. While the Fourth Schedule of the Rules exempts educational institutions from this requirement for some purposes, it remains unclear whether the school or Google is responsible for consent when AI Overviews and AI Mode process students’ queries.

The policy has drawn sharp criticism from US politicians. On October 26, Senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley asked Google why its AI features were turned on by default on school devices, setting a November 2 deadline for a response. "Google is forcing their A.I. products into classrooms across America, and children are paying the price," they wrote.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Google is using monopoly power to force AI into public schools. Senator Bernie Sanders called it extortion, and former US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) chair Lina Khan said Google is trying to coerce schools into adopting AI, according to SiliconANGLE. Google responded to concerns about students using AI to shortcut schoolwork by stating that schools have told them they want control.

Google has not provided further comment on the specific criticisms or the international implications of the policy.
